Print Story WFC3 - when will it end?!?!

I caused a lot of confusion about the end date of the 3rd husi short story challenge. I can admit that now. It's the whole timezone thing. I didn't realise people would get so hung up on it.

Rather than stuff it up again, I need your help to work it out. The last thing I said is that it's not over while it's still the 23rd somewhere in the world(up until midnight in that place). I don't know where that is, or what that works out to GMT. (some time on the 24th, no doubt!)

If you're smart, you'll be able to work it out for greenwich mean time, and make it a comment in the diary letting the rest of us know

But don't put it in unless you're sure, cos otherwise this diary will be a big confusing debate all over again!

okay GO!

oh yeah, if you've missed it the other details are http://www.hulver.com/scoop/story/2006/8/2/62828/44900

Does the 23rd on the Julian Calendar still count? by lm (4.00 / 3) #1 Tue Aug 22, 2006 at 08:51:02 AM EST
I know of a few localities that still haven't made the switch to Pope Gregory's newfangled system.

There is no more degenerate kind of state than that in which the richest are supposed to be the best.

HINT by DullTrev (2.00 / 0) #3 Tue Aug 22, 2006 at 08:56:45 AM EST

The International Date Line is on the other side of the planet from the Greenwich Meridian.

ANOTHER HINT: The planet rotates roughly once every 24 hours.

The International Date Line by Kellnerin (4.00 / 3) #5 Tue Aug 22, 2006 at 09:03:23 AM EST
Is GMT-12, yes? So when it strikes midnight in the last spot on the earth at the end of August 23, it'll be noon on the 24th GMT. Which, I hesitate to further convert, is 10 p.m. on the 24th, your local time.

And hulver has even fixed Edit Story in time for you to update the FP post with the new deadline!

IIRC, it actually runs through the middle of that time zone.

Leaving aside wierd countries like kiribati which moved themselves to the other side of the date line arbitrarily.

they're entirely on the new day side of the international day line, even though some of their islands are to the east of Hawai'i.

WIPO: LPM time by cam (2.00 / 0) #6 Tue Aug 22, 2006 at 09:03:59 AM EST
Luna Park Meridian time. Why does Melbourne's Luna Park look like the devourer of souls?

Time explained: by Jack Wagner (4.00 / 3) #7 Tue Aug 22, 2006 at 09:09:03 AM EST
Melbourne is running on Standard time zone with no DST offset, leaving the time at GMT + 10 hours. As such all people living in the states who need to correct for the time difference should first convert to GMT, using a +1 offest for DST if they live West of Indiana and a -1 DST offset if they live East of Indiana. If they live in Indiana they should move.

After correcting for DST they then need to convert to GMT which can easily be accomplished by subtracting (((4 + 0)/x4 - 4ac)) for EDT) or (((4 + 2)(/x4 - 4ac))) for CDT) or (((4 + 3/x4 - 4ac)) for PDT) for all values of x as a goes from 1 to infinity and c is the relative distance (in meters) from the equator, thus arriving at the correct time.

People living in the UK should correct for DST by adding 2 hours, then adjusting for GMT by adding another hour for every 10 degrees they live south of Latitude: 51° 30' Longitude: 0° 07'.

Warmest regards,
--Jack
